Keeping Up With Your New Year Resolutions?

Only a week ago, I was noting on my twitter acount how many people were getting busy on the cycling path where I train in Orlando.  Seriously, cyclists, runners, walkers, all smiling, determined to start the year right.  Well, I have to admit, there were many missing this morning,  a week after.  Their busy life seem to have won the battle with the good resolutions. Until next year? Hopefully not!  What about you, how are your new year resolutions going?  Keeping motivated, energised, determined?  Good for you!

Or have you joined the rank of those who have given up on making it happen this year?  Lack of time, patience, discipline?  Give yourself a little break, and a second chance! Resolutions don’t need to start january first!

Let’s be honest, a resolution is nothing more than a good habit we try to include into our daily lives. I once read somewhere that, to make a new habit last, we need to focus on it daily, for a whole month. From my own experience, it works! It seems like my brains then realises that its there to stay, and stop resisting!  This year, I decided I would add morning meditation into my routine. Up at 5h30, ouch.  It’s been a full week now, and one day out of two, I don’t feel like it. The other day, I think I am too busy. But I am not giving up!  I really want to do this, and I believe it will have a positive impact in my life. But I have to say, its not easy!  To help a little, I remind myself a few things;

  1. Every day can be the “ first” day of our “new” life, not just January first!
  2. Its okay to dream big, but we all have to start small!!  It takes one single training session before you win a medal, then two, then three, etc..
  3. To miss a day is no failure, and it certainly is NOT an excuse to tell yourself “ I tried and it didn’t work!” . Just reset and resart the next morning!
  4. Always ask yourself 3 questions: Am I doing this for my own good?  Is this important to me?  Will it have a positive impact in my life? If the anser is : Yes. Yes. Yes, then I know the efforts are well worth it.
  5. Never try to change everything all at once. One thing, one change at a time, until it becomes an habit. Then one more. If we succeed in making a few positive permanent changes every year, 5 or 6, imagine in 10 years, we will be perfect! ( well, almost!)

Good luck !
